FTSE tipped to open modestly higher this morning

PRE-OPEN REPORT: Headline shares are tipped to open twenty to twenty-five points higher this morning, according to financial websites, as bargain hunters move in after yesterday's heavy blue chip losses.

US & ASIA

In the US last night, the Dow lost 102 points at 12,927, the Nasdaq fell 30 points at 2,970 and the S&P500 shed 12 points at 1,367.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was recently down 94 points at 9,448, while the Hang Seng ended the morning off 65 points at 20,559.

WTI crude oil traded at $103.08 a barrel and gold settled at $1,636 an ounce.

LONDON MARKETS

In the corporate diary today, interim results are due from ARM Holdings, Associated British Foods, Carr's Milling Industries, Icon, Next Fifteen Communications, Smiths News and Torchmark Corporation.

Final results are scheduled from LiDCO Group, Netplay TV, O'Key Group, Petroceltic International and Surgical Innovations Group.

Trading statements are expected from BBA Aviation, Carpetright, Filtrona and Reed Elsevier.

BBA Aviation, Central Rand Gold, EMIS Group, EP Global Opportunities Trust, Filtrona, Law Debenture Corp., Microgen, Modern Water and Shire host their AGMs.
