FTSE Falls As Pound Makes Gains

Tuesday, 13th March 2018

The Dow Jones also slipped after the news that Tillerson, the Secretary of State in the USA, had been fired by Trump. Tillersonís dismissal came after he spoke with Boris Johnson, the UK Foreign Secretary in a meeting about the recent nerve gas attack against a former Russian spy in Salisbury.

The pound was also boosted by figures from the Office for Budget Responsibility, which had upgraded its growth projections, and forecast a fall in Government borrowing and national debt in the next few years. The forecasts came alongside the Spring Statement from Philip Hammond, which hinted that there would be an increase in public spending, following several years of austerity.

The pound made some slight gains against the Euro as well as the dollar, while the FTSE 100 slipped by 75.98 points and the FTSE 250 slipped by 254.30 points. Greencore, an Irish food-to-go company, was the poorest performer in the mid caps, following a profit warning relating to issues in their US division.
